Invitation to Attend Conversation on Institutional Neutrality and Free Speech on April 21

April 15, 2025

Dear Members of the George Washington University Community,

In these challenging times in higher education, many colleges and universities nationwide have debated issues of institutional neutrality or restraint, or approaches by which institutions refrain from issuing statements — or selectively issue statements — on political and social issues. Associated with this debate are discussions around academic freedom and freedom of expression — protections that are foundational to GW’s identity as a scholarly enterprise.

To advance a conversation on these topics with the GW community, on Monday, April 21, from 3-4:30pm, I will host a virtual discussion with two legal scholars: Vikram D. Amar, Distinguished Professor of Law at UC Davis School of Law, and Frederick M. Lawrence, Distinguished Lecturer at Georgetown Law and the 10th Secretary and CEO of the Phi Beta Kappa Society. All students, faculty and staff are invited to register and participate.

Register via Zoom

I look forward to your participation in this important conversation next week.

Sincerely,

Christopher Alan Bracey
Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs
Professor of Law
