Middle States Accreditation Self-Study Process (2025 - 2027)
The George Washington University is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). Its accreditation was last reaffirmed in 2018.
The next self-study and evaluation began in fall 2024. This website is available to help the GW community engage with the self-study process.
Accreditation is an expression of confidence that the institution meets and is in compliance with MSCHE's seven Standards of Excellence. According to Middle States, “accredited institutions are expected to demonstrate compliance with these standards and requirements, to conduct their activities in a manner consistent with the standards and requirements, and to engage in ongoing processes of self-review and improvement.” It is through the self-study, required every eight years, that an institution demonstrates its compliance with the standards.
GW is launching its self-study with the following intended outcomes:
- Demonstrate how GW meets the Commission’s Standards for Accreditation and Requirements of Affiliation.
- Focus on continuous improvement in the attainment of the institution’s mission and its institutional priorities.
- Engage the institutional community in an inclusive and transparent self-appraisal process that actively and deliberately seeks to involve members from all areas of the institutional community.
- Support GW’s overall mission by studying topics related to the university’s strategic framework and provide insights into how innovations may advance university goals.
