Dear Members of the George Washington University Community,
We continue to make significant progress in advancing our strategic framework, particularly our goal of generating scholarship with impact. Impressive successes showcased at our second annual InnovationFest, maintaining our robust research enterprise through significant changes in federal research funding, and the forward-looking efforts of the faculty-led working group on building an interdisciplinary research ecosystem have created incredible momentum at GW and are having a positive impact on the world.
Interim Vice President for Research Robert H. Miller and his hardworking team have been integral to these efforts and so many more advancements in our research enterprise. After nearly two years of committed service, Bob will be stepping down as Interim Vice President to return full-time to the School of Medicine and Health Sciences and his other roles as vice dean, Vivian Gill Distinguished Research Professor, and professor of anatomy and cell biology, and to focus on supporting the Universal Health Services (UHS) transition. He will remain in the role until the next Interim Vice President is appointed and will be available to assist that individual.
We are soliciting internal nominations and self-nominations for the Interim Vice President role, to be considered both by me and by Provost-Designate Ed Balleisen. This appointment will be full-time, with focused attention to improving the services provided to GW’s research communities. Interested faculty should send their CV and one-page letter of interest to Jennifer Abbruzzese at jabbru3
gwu [dot] edu (jabbru3[at]gwu[dot]edu) by Friday, May 15. Letters of interest should detail engagement with GW’s structures for research administration and leadership experience. We expect to announce the new Interim Vice President by the end of the month.
Provost Balleisen will launch a search for the permanent Vice President for Research this fall.
President Granberg and I are incredibly grateful for everything Bob has done to support cutting-edge research, discovery and innovation at GW. We will celebrate his accomplishments and contributions when he steps down, but please join us now in thanking him for his monumental efforts!
Sincerely,
John Lach
Interim Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs
