Planning for Federal Sustainability in the Next Decade
President Obama issued Executive Order (EO) 13693, Planning for Federal Sustainability in the Next Decade, on March 19, 2015. Under the overarching directive to reduce Federal GHG emissions by 40%, agencies are required to advance waste prevention and pollution prevention by diverting at least 50% of non-hazardous solid waste, including food and compostable material, annually; pursuing opportunities for net-zero waste or additional diversion opportunities; diverting at least 50% of non-hazardous construction and demolition materials and debris; and reducing or minimizing the quantity of toxic and hazardous chemicals and materials acquired, used, or disposed of. Agencies are also required to promote electronics stewardship by employing environmentally sound practices with respect to the disposition of all agency excess or surplus electronic products.
