Dear GW Community Members,
The university is closely following discussions on the federal spending bill and the possibility that lawmakers may not reach an agreement before midnight on Oct. 1, which could lead to a government shutdown.
We recognize that the prospect of a shutdown may cause concern and uncertainty for members of the GW community and their families. In the event of a shutdown, GW will continue normal operations. Classes will proceed as scheduled, and residence halls, dining, campus services and recreational facilities will remain open. Please know that the university is committed to supporting you through this period.
Below is more information regarding the impact of a government shutdown and the resources available.
Resources for Students
- GW Cares: If you or someone you know needs access to additional support, you can submit a GW Cares report to connect them with help. Stressful situations can increase the need for mental health care, and all students have access to TimelyCare for virtual 24/7 support.
- GI Bill Benefits: Student veterans may experience a delay in receiving GI Bill education benefits in a prolonged shutdown. Military and Veteran Services is in contact with student veterans and our military-affiliated community to offer support and will provide emergency funding options if benefits are delayed.
- Financial Aid: A shutdown will not affect students’ financial aid awards.
Resources for Researchers
- Research Funding: Federal research agencies will cease reviewing proposals, which may delay future funding opportunities. For existing grantees, the Office of the Vice Provost for Research will provide information via email outlining potential disruptions and recommendations for coordinating with funding agencies.
Resources for Faculty and Staff
- Employee Assistance Program (EAP): GW’s EAP provides free access by phone to attorneys, certified public accountants and certified financial planners to help on a wide range of legal and financial concerns, including budgeting, getting out of debt, credit card and loan problems, bankruptcy and financial planning for emergencies.
- Financial Need: Faculty and staff who participate in GW’s 403(b) Supplemental Retirement Plan and are experiencing significant financial need may be eligible for a loan against their plan or a financial hardship withdrawal from their plan account. Employees can speak with a retirement consultant at any time to understand their current investment options. Contact GW Benefits for more information at 571-553-8382 or benefits
gwu [dot] edu (benefits[at]gwu[dot]edu), or contact GW’s retirement plan vendors directly at 1-800-343-0860 for Fidelity Investments or 1-800-842-2776 for TIAA.
Other impacts to the university community will vary depending on the length of a shutdown. For weekly updates, please visit GW’s Federal Updates, or consult the U.S. Office of Personnel Management for the latest operating status. The university will monitor and continue to provide updates and assistance to GW community members.
Sincerely,
